New Zealand’s exhibition for Biennale Arte 2019 in Venice to be previewed 8 May
March 11, 2019Contemporary HUM: An interview with Dame Jenny Gibbs
April 17, 2019Bill was our artist for the 55th Venice Biennale in 2013. It was only the sixth time New Zealand had shown officially at this mega-biennale — and he did us proud. New Zealand’s Commissioner for the 55th Biennale, Jenny Harper, said the following about his work.
“His response to an unusual site beside Santa Maria della Pietà spoke of the assuredness of his years of experience as well as a ‘down under’ practicality,” she said.
“His special combinations of new and [mostly] old and ordinary, were spectacular and intimate. ‘Front door out back’ had a cheerful air of improvisation, but nothing about it was gratuitous. In a city of extraordinary light, his newly-invented light works shone.”
“They live on now in new situations as Bebop, above the marble staircase of Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū. For all of us who worked with Bill on Venice, or on any other project, it’s hard to think of him gone.”
Farewell, Bill. Your art will do your task now, continuing to work its magic for us all.
